OSMOSEA aboard Vento di Sardegna

OSMOSEA aboard VENTO DI SARDEGNA marks a significant adventure for Andrea Mura, reaffirming his love for the sea and long-distance sailing. Another challenge for him is the Global Solo Challenge, one of the toughest solo races—the non-stop solo circumnavigation around the world, covering approximately 26,000 nautical miles eastbound via the three great capes.

Navigating through the most remote areas, such as the Point Nemo in the Pacific, also known as the “oceanic pole of inaccessibility.” Point Nemo is nearly 2,700 km away from the nearest islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean and stands as the farthest point from any land. One of the crucial factors in tackling such a journey was selecting onboard equipment; among them, a vital component was the water desalination system. The absence of fresh water would have meant certain withdrawal from the race, making Osmosea an integral part of this grand adventure and confirming its support for Andrea Mura.

Today, Osmosea is a leading company in the field of desalination and water treatment systems, with two systems installed onboard the Open 50 to ensure maximum autonomy and the security of having a backup system in case of damage.

With over 15 years of experience, Osmosea specializes in the design, production, and distribution of reverse osmosis desalination systems and water purifiers. Through a synergy of passion and technology, Osmosea offers cutting-edge solutions for water treatment.

We had the opportunity to interview Andrea Mura and Mario Alagna (owner of Osmosea) and ask them some questions.

Andrea, how important is the preparation of the boat in such a challenging endeavor?

Shore preparation is crucial, and unfortunately, I had only two months to do it because there wasn’t enough time. Many things that should have been checked and tested before going into the water, I did while sailing.

How important is physical and mental preparation?

Unfortunately, I had to work on the boat until the last moment as well. What saved me on this journey was my extensive sailing experience. If I had done this world tour a few years ago, I would have had difficulties finishing it. Experience made the difference.

Osmosea onboard? A watermaker for 27,000 miles

The watermaker is essential; without water, I would have had to withdraw. Having two systems was crucial. Osmosea helped and supported me by installing two energy recovery desalination units, the NEW 12 producing 30 L/h. They provided extraordinary assistance during my voyage, especially when one of the units malfunctioned.

Mr. Alagna, how did you assist Andrea Mura?

The energy recovery watermaker model New 12 S30 includes internal sensors to protect the equipment in case of water shortage. On VENTO DI SARDEGNA, Andrea Mura chose not to install the electronic part, and the high speed of the boat caused this specific issue, leading to equipment stall.

We immediately intervened by providing assistance through video tutorials created and sent in real-time by Osmosea. Andrea Mura could follow our instructions and get the watermaker back in operation. We’re thrilled to have been part of this great challenge because it was an exceptional test bench for Osmosea. A test of over 27,000 miles at the limits, under extreme conditions where equipment faces incredible stresses.

Knowing that our OSMOSEA watermakers played a part in Andrea Mura completing the Global Solo Challenge fills us with pride and motivates us to continue on this path that has led us to achieve significant milestones. If the opportunity arises, we will certainly be onboard for other challenges where Andrea Mura takes center stage.

The Energy Recovery watermaker is equipped with a pressure booster. It’s simple and essential, featuring a microcomputer control unit for enhanced monitoring. It operates directly from the batteries and is easy to install due to its compact dimensions. It’s the perfect travel companion for those who enjoy sailing and staying at anchor for extended periods without needing to return to port.
